Why OKX market orders fill at worse prices in busy hours and what to do

Guides · 2026-10-07

A market order on OKX promises speed, not price. When markets are calm and the pair is busy, the fill is usually close to the last price. During news, liquidations or sudden swings, the order book thins out, the spread widens, and the same market order can fill several levels away from what you expected. This is slippage, and it is separate from the trading fee shown on the official fee page. This guide explains why it happens, how to read the order book before you click, and which habits help you keep control of the price you actually pay.

What changes in busy hours

In volatile periods, market makers often pull or widen their quotes, so fewer orders sit near the current price. Your market order then consumes several price levels to complete. The larger your order relative to the available depth, the further the average fill drifts. This happens on every exchange, so the useful step is to measure it on the pairs you trade.

Read depth before you click

Open the order book and check the gap between best bid and best ask, plus the size available at the first few levels. If your order would eat through several levels, the fill will be noticeably worse. Some order forms show an estimated average price; compare it with the last traded price before confirming, and cancel if the gap looks too large.

Use limits when price matters

A limit order sets the worst price you accept. It may not fill immediately, but it cannot fill far from your plan. For larger orders, splitting into smaller pieces over time can also reduce the impact. Check the OKX help center for how maker and taker fees apply to each approach, because the fee and the slippage together make up your real cost.

Track what you actually paid

After each trade, compare the price you saw before clicking with the average fill price in your order history. Note the time and market conditions. Over a few weeks this log shows when slippage tends to be worst for your pairs, and you can simply avoid market orders during those windows unless speed truly matters more than price.
