Rehearse your first OKX perpetual in Demo Trading before you risk real margin
OKX has a demo trading mode with simulated funds that uses the same order screens as the live market. How to switch it on, what to practise, and which differences to keep in mind before you trade for real.
OKX | the reader's region | the reader's funding currency | order execution and cost control
Perpetual futures pack many new ideas into one screen: leverage, margin mode, order type, take profit, stop loss and an estimated liquidation price. Learning all of that with real money means paying for every misunderstanding. OKX offers a demo trading mode with simulated balances that runs on the same interface, so you can make your mistakes there. The point is not to win in demo mode; it is to understand exactly what each button does before it costs anything.
Switching to demo trading and back
In the OKX app, open the menu from your profile area and look for Demo trading; on the website it is available from the trade menu. When it is active, the interface shows a clear demo label and a separate simulated balance. Check for that label every time you start a session, because the two modes look almost identical. When you finish, switch back explicitly and confirm the label has disappeared before placing any real order.
A rehearsal plan with specific exercises
Treat the session like a lesson with tasks. Open a small long position with isolated margin and low leverage and find the liquidation estimate. Change the leverage and watch how that estimate moves. Add a take-profit and a stop-loss to the open position from the positions tab. Place a limit order that does not fill and cancel it. Close half the position, then the rest. Write down anything that surprised you, since those are the parts you need to revisit in the help center.
Where demo mode differs from the real market
Simulated fills can be more forgiving than live ones, especially in fast markets or thin contracts, so slippage and partial fills may look better than they will be. Emotions are also absent; losing pretend money does not feel like losing your own. Funding payments and fees may be simulated, but check the OKX help center for how demo trading handles them rather than assuming. Use demo mode to learn mechanics, not to estimate how profitable a strategy will be.
Moving to live trading carefully
When you switch to live mode, start with a position much smaller than you used in practice and use the same exercises: check the margin mode, read the liquidation estimate, set a stop-loss right away. Transfer to the trading account only an amount you can afford to lose. Review the OKX fee rules page so you know which rates apply to your account, and keep notes on each trade so you can compare them with your demo sessions.

Scenario checkpoint
- Look for the demo label at the start of every session and confirm it is gone before real orders.
- Practise leverage changes, stop-loss placement, limit orders and partial closes in demo mode.
- Remember that demo fills and emotions differ from live trading and learn mechanics only.
- Start live trading much smaller, with isolated margin and a stop-loss set immediately.
